Wool Care

What is a wool nappy cover?

Wool nappy covers are basically the old fashioned plastic pants, but made from gorgeously soft wool and come in many shapes and forms. Longies, shorties and soakers being the main ones! Use them instead of PUL wraps for a more breathable alternative. Wool has anti-bacterial properties making it perfect for use as nappy covers!. Wool needs to be lanolised with a liquid or solid lanolin, to make it waterproof.

How do I take care of my wool nappy cover?

I find wool so easy to care for. Wool only really needs washing once soiled in, or if after daily airing, it still smells. It also needs lanolising approx once a month. Everything you need to care for you wool is readily available either from us, or other WAHM nappy sites. Please ask us and we'll happily refer you.

Do I need to lanolise when they arrive?

All our wool nappy covers have been lanolised at least once (but sometimes 3 times) by the time they arrive to you and are ready to use straight away. If after some use, they feel damp on the outside, they more than likely need re-lanolising.

How do I dry them between uses?

Between uses, leave your wool to air dry. If when they are dry, they still smell, they may need to be washed.

How do I wash them?

Our wool items can be hand-washed using a scented or unscented wool wash, or a mild soap.

How do I lanolise my nappy covers?

Lots of people vary in their ways of lanolising, so here is how we successfully lanolise our products.

Using a pea sized amount (or half a teaspoon) of solid or liquid lanolin, place into a container/jar/cup with a squirt of wool or baby wash, pour in boiling water and mix vigorously until the lanolin has dissolved and you have a milky looking mixture. Fill a bowl (washing up bowl would do) with warm water and pour the mixture in. Mix together. Then place your wool into the bowl and gently sqeeze the mixture through the wool. Leave for a few hours, or overnight. Stir up the mixture occasionally. Empty out the bowl and lay your wool cover onto a towel. Fold up the towel which should gently sqeeze out any excess water. DO NOT rinse the nappy cover. Then it is important to lay the wool flat to dry. I lay ours on a rack in the airing cupboard.
