How to care for your cloth

To store your nappies -

Our personal advise, through experience, is to separate the inserts from the pocket nappies before placing in your wetbag or bucket, and also to dispose of any loose soil down the toilet. This saves handling the wet nappies on wash day, instead you can unzip the bag or grab the bucket, tip the nappies into the machine, throw the bag in with the nappies if using, and voila, switch on!

Use a zipped wetbag or an empty bucket with a lid (which both hold in any smells) to store your nappies in until wash day. Never soak, or use napisan ect as this shortens the life of your nappies (plus it stinks!)

To wash your nappies

Our recommendation is as follows: Do a cold pre-wash to open up the nappy fibres and rinse off any poo remnants, then wash at 40 degrees (an occasional 60) with about a tablespoon of non bio detergent to thoroughly clean the nappies. You can do an occasional extra rinse to reduce detergent build up in nappy fibres. (No 90 degree washes and no fabric softener EVER)

ALWAYS pre wash your nappies and inserts when they first arrive (after a quick try on and photo shoot.. we all do it!!), or else you risk reduced absorbency and wicking (leaking), putting many new mums off. With each wash your cloth nappy becomes more and more absorbent.

Leaky nappies?

If you find your nappies suddenly start to leak (also known as wick) around the legs, you may have a detergent build up.

Stains?

These will usually come out. Have faith. If you pull your nappies from the machine to see lots of poo stains, put them staright on the line (or hang in a bright window if no line) and just leave them. If it's bright sunshine, it will take a few hours, if not, leave on for a few days, come wind or rain, and you have enough spare nappies/inserts to use while you wait. Mother nature will rid them of stains.

Stinky washine machine?

It may help if you put your washing machine on to full wash, at 95 degrees (or it's highest setting) with nothing but a bit of bicarb or clear vinegar, once every few months. This will freshen up your machine.

Feeling disheartened?

Don't lose faith. If your nappies are leaking, or you have any problems at all, it's so important to contact us, as we will be able to advise you. We have 8 children between us, chances are, we have been there, done that and got the tshirt! It would be so much better if you contacted us, than gave up.  Plus wouldn't you miss this?
